Finals week

Seven days of exams. One coherent plan.

7 daysfor: College or high-school student in the final week before exams

Finals week is where a semester of consistent work pays off — or where the lack of consistent work becomes visible. This playbook assumes the second case: you're one week out, you know your Brain scores per subject, and you need to make specific decisions about where to spend the last 40-60 study hours.

The single biggest mistake in finals week is trying to re-learn everything. It doesn't work. What works is retrieving what you already have, sharpening the specific weak spots your Brain score has identified, and sleeping enough that the retrieval actually holds. This playbook is calibrated for that.

If you're using Brainback all semester, this playbook cuts against your instinct to add new material in the final week. Trust the recall queue. Trust the trend line. The compounding done. This week is about execution, not learning.

the plan

You have 7 days. Three exams stacked. Here's what to actually do — day by day.

Each row is a day (or block) with a specific focus and a specific Brainback move. Rehearsable. Adjustable.

Sunday (Day 7)Triage: rank exams by (weight × current gap)Open Brain score for each subject. The subject with the lowest score gets Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday. Second-lowest gets Thursday-Friday. Highest gets Saturday.2 hrs
Monday (Day 6)Deep-dive on subject #1's weakest 2-3 topicsLearn mode on 3-4 problems from the weakest topic. Explain-back at lunch. Recall queue in the evening.6-8 hrs
Tuesday (Day 5)Continue subject #1 · shift to next-weakest topicsSame shape. Recall queue at ~50 cards specific to this subject.6-8 hrs
Wednesday (Day 4)Subject #1 practice exam · integrationTake a past exam or full practice test. Every wrong answer becomes a Learn session.8 hrs
Thursday (Day 3)Pivot to subject #2 · weakest topics firstSame rhythm as Monday-Tuesday, condensed. Recall queue still catches subject #1 in background.6-8 hrs
Friday (Day 2)Subject #2 practice exam + subject #3 targeted reviewFull practice exam for #2. Explain-back on subject #3's weakest 2 concepts.6-8 hrs
Saturday (Day 1)Recall queue only · rest early · protect sleepFull recall pass across all three subjects. No new material. Sleep by 10pm. Trust the week.3-4 hrs
things not to do

Three pitfalls that quietly kill this playbook.

Every playbook has anti-patterns that feel productive but produce nothing. Skipping these is worth as much as executing the plan.

Reading new textbook chapters

because · Anything you're seeing for the first time this week will not stick before the exam. Retrieval only.

All-nighters

because · Memory consolidation happens during sleep. All-nighters trade short-term recall for long-term retention. Almost always net-negative for the exam.

Grinding easy recall cards to feel productive

because · The queue is calibrated. Grinding easy cards defeats the spacing effect and burns time you need for hard ones.

fair questions

Everything students ask about this playbook.

What if I haven't been using Brainback all semester?

This week won't feel like the payoff we describe. But you can still get value: focus on Learn mode + explain-back for the specific topics you know are weakest. Skip the recall queue for now (nothing in it) and use Learn mode as a focused-tutoring surface.

What if my exams are on consecutive days?

Cluster preparation: 4 days on the first exam's subjects, then compressed reviews for the follow-on exams. The day-before-each-exam should be recall-only for that exam's subjects. Sleep matters more than one more study hour.

How do I know when to stop the night before?

When you've done the recall pass and your Brain score isn't moving from further review, you're at the ceiling for tomorrow. Stop. Sleep.

What about caffeine and stimulants?

Caffeine at normal doses (200-400mg total during the day, none after 3pm) is fine and often helpful. Higher doses, other stimulants, and sleep-disruptors are almost always net-negative.
