Brainback
product · efficiency mode

Normal AI, for everything that isn't your coursework.

Brainback isn't anti-AI. It's anti-outsourcing-your-brain-on-the-things-that-matter. Efficiency mode is where you draft emails, brainstorm, summarize articles, plan the trip.

how the split works

A tiny classifier decides. Every message. Automatically.

Every Efficiency mode message runs through a Haiku classifier before it reaches the model. The classifier reads your declared subjects and asks one question: is this an academic problem in one of them?

classifier says yes

Your message never sees the general assistant. You’re redirected to Learn mode with a friendly nudge: “that looks like a problem you’re studying — here’s the Socratic side of the product.”

classifier says no

You’re in normal-assistant land. Sonnet-class inference, no attempt gate, no hint ladder. Draft the paragraph, summarize the article, plan the trip. Get in, get out, get on with your day.

without the classifier, Efficiency mode becomes the loophole

Why classify at all

Without the classifier, Efficiency mode would become the loophole. Users would type calculus problems into it to bypass Learn mode, and the whole product’s stance would collapse in a week.

With the classifier, the split is enforced automatically. You don’t have to think about which mode to be in. The product does that for you.

False positives

The classifier occasionally redirects an Efficiency mode message that felt clearly non-academic. When this happens, hit “stay in Efficiency” and the message goes through. Those decisions are training data for the next tuning pass.

We prefer false positives to false negatives. A false positive is annoying. A false negative would let a student solve homework in the wrong mode — quietly poisoning the product for the students who use it correctly.

Availability

Efficiency mode is on for Student ($12/mo) and Parent ($20/mo). It’s off for Free — Sonnet-class inference on every general-assistant message is the largest driver of our per-user cost, and we can’t cover it in the free tier without compromising Learn mode.
