Elaborative interrogation is the study technique of asking 'why is this true?' about every fact or concept you're trying to learn — and then generating your own answer, even if it's partial or wrong. The act of generating the explanation is what produces the learning, not the correctness of the explanation.

This sounds trivial. It's not. Most students, when they encounter a fact, mentally file it as-stated. Elaborative interrogation forces you to interrogate the fact: 'why does the mitochondrion have more surface area in muscle cells?' 'Why does the Constitution not specify the number of Supreme Court justices?' 'Why does light bend when it enters glass?' The act of trying to answer these questions integrates the fact into your existing knowledge network.

Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 meta-analysis of study techniques ranked elaborative interrogation as the third most effective strategy, behind only practice testing (retrieval practice) and distributed practice (spaced repetition). Which puts it above every other study technique students actually use — including highlighting, summarization, and rereading.

Brainback's Learn mode is elaborative interrogation by construction. The tutor's default response format is a guiding question. That question is often an elaborative interrogation prompt: 'you said the enzyme denatures — why does denaturation stop the reaction?' The tutor doesn't provide the answer; you generate it. The mechanism isn’t decorative. Understanding WHY the effect exists lets you tell when it applies and when it doesn’t.

The cognitive mechanism is knowledge integration. Isolated facts are hard to retain because they don't have retrieval pathways in your existing knowledge network. Elaborative interrogation forces the creation of those pathways — you generate an answer to 'why?' by pulling on related concepts you already know, and the retrieval of those related concepts creates the integration.

The neural correlate involves activation of prefrontal cortex regions associated with active elaboration and semantic integration, in concert with hippocampal areas for episodic memory. Passive reading activates fewer regions and produces less network integration; elaborative interrogation activates more.

The reason it works even with partial or wrong answers: the generative attempt is what produces the learning, not the correctness. Students who guess 'because the mitochondrion needs to make ATP faster' (partially correct) integrate the concept better than students who don't guess at all. The corrective feedback afterward is high-value because you now care about the answer.

You highlight the sentence. You move on. Two weeks later on the essay exam, you can quote the sentence but can't explain why Madison thought this.

You stop and ask: WHY does Madison think interest regulation is the 'principal task'? Generate a guess: 'because he assumes factions are unavoidable in a free society, so containment is the government's main job.' Now go check — is that what Madison actually argues in the surrounding paragraphs? Yes, roughly.

You've now integrated the sentence with Madison's broader argument (factions are unavoidable → government's job is containment, not elimination). That integrated knowledge produces exam essays in a way the isolated quote can't. Cost: 90 extra seconds per key sentence.

How is this different from Feynman technique?

Feynman is comprehensive explanation of a whole concept. Elaborative interrogation is atomic — asking 'why?' about one fact at a time. Complementary; you can use both in the same study session.

Doesn't the tutor giving me the 'why' question defeat the point?

The tutor gives you the question; you generate the answer. That's the whole mechanism. If we gave you the answer, it would be re-reading.

What if I can't answer the 'why'?

Perfect — that's the diagnostic. You've just found a specific gap. Go back to the source material, fill it, then attempt the elaboration again.

Does this work for math and equations?

Yes — 'why does this equation take this form?' 'Why is this the right substitution?' The interrogation applies to procedures as much as to facts.

Doesn't asking 'why' about every fact slow reading way down?

Yes, by ~30%. That's the trade — slower reading, much better retention. For material you'll be tested on, the trade is almost always worth it.
