The spaced week is not a new time commitment — it's a re-arrangement of the study time you already have. The principle: spread each subject across the week rather than blocking a full day on one subject. Same total hours; dramatically better retention.
The specific finding: 3 hours of physics on Monday, then 3 hours on Wednesday, then 3 hours on Friday produces better retention than 9 hours on Monday and none the rest of the week. Same 9 hours of physics. Different schedule. Real difference — replicated across dozens of studies since the 1970s.

List your subjects · list your available study hours
Sunday planning: write down each subject you're actively studying + realistic hours per week for each.
Split each subject's hours across at least 3 days
If physics needs 6 hours this week, split into 3 blocks of 2 hours across Mon/Wed/Fri (or similar). NOT one 6-hour block on Saturday.
Rotate subjects across the week
Monday morning: physics. Monday afternoon: history. Different subjects in one day beats one subject for the whole day. Interleaving at the day level, not just card level.
Preserve morning-recall regardless
Morning recall passes across all subjects (interleaved by the queue). The spaced-week principle is about ACTIVE study, not review.
Weekend catch-up in the same shape
If you fall behind, catch up with spaced blocks (2 hours here, 2 hours there) rather than a massed weekend cramming session.
Track adherence for 4 weeks
The pattern's benefits compound. First week feels novel; fourth week feels natural. By month 2, the shape is your default.

The mechanism, in one paragraph.
Spacing effects (Ebbinghaus 1885 onward) apply not just to review timing but to initial-encoding timing. Massed practice on one subject produces short-term fluency and long-term forgetting. Spaced practice produces slightly-slower short-term progress and dramatically-better long-term retention. Every meta-analysis has replicated this.
Skipping the spaced principle because massed practice 'feels more productive.' It does. That's the trap. Massed practice feels productive because you're doing a lot of one thing; spaced practice feels choppy because you're rotating. The felt sense is inversely correlated with the actual effect on retention.

What if my schedule forces me to have full days for one subject?▾
Do what you can. Even 2 days of the same subject (with rest between) beats 1 massed day. Perfect spacing isn't possible; approximate spacing is.
Does this apply to lab courses or seminars with fixed times?▾
The classes themselves are fixed. Your study time around them is what you're rearranging. If chem lab is Tuesday 2-5, your chem study time should be Mon/Wed/Fri, not all Tuesday evening.
How is this different from interleaving?▾
Interleaving mixes problem types within a session. Spaced week mixes subjects across the week. Different scales; both effective; both operationalized by Brainback.
What if I'm cramming for one exam this week?▾
See the finals-week playbook. Cramming for one specific exam is the exception where massing on one subject makes sense. Return to spaced-week structure the following week.
