Deliberate practice is Anders Ericsson's framework for how expertise actually gets built. The famous '10,000 hours' pop-culture claim is Ericsson's finding badly quoted — his actual claim is that ~10,000 hours of DELIBERATE practice (not just any practice) is the average path to expert performance in cognitively demanding domains. Ten thousand hours of ambient practice produces experienced amateurs.
The three properties of deliberate practice: (1) it targets a specific weakness — not the whole skill, one specific sub-skill at the edge of your current ability. (2) It produces immediate, specific feedback on each attempt. (3) It requires focused attention — the practice hurts a little, and it's not sustainable for more than 1-4 hours per day.
Most studying is not deliberate practice. Re-reading is ambient exposure. Grinding easy problems is skill maintenance, not skill acquisition. Watching lectures is passive reception. Deliberate practice looks more like: attempt a hard problem at the edge of your ability, get corrected immediately on the specific error, attempt again with the correction integrated, repeat.

How it actually works, at the cognitive and neural level.
The mechanism isn’t decorative. Understanding WHY the effect exists lets you tell when it applies and when it doesn’t.
The cognitive mechanism involves working memory and cognitive load. Deliberate practice keeps you in the zone where working memory is nearly full (which is where learning happens) but not over-full (which is where learning stops). Below the zone is rehearsal; above it is failure.
The neural correlate involves myelination of frequently-used neural pathways. Deliberate practice engages specific circuits repeatedly and intensely, triggering the gradual myelination process that converts high-effort operations into low-effort automatic ones. Without the deliberate targeting, myelination happens diffusely and doesn't produce noticeable skill gains.
The 1-4 hour daily cap on deliberate practice is real. It's set by the depletion of focused attention — after 4 hours, further practice is either lower-quality (attention slipping) or ambient (working memory rebuilding, not stretching). Elite musicians and athletes practice in blocks with rest in between; students who try to do 8 hours of deliberate practice a day mostly do 4 hours of it plus 4 hours of exhausted grinding.

How to actually do it tomorrow morning.
45-90 minutes per session · 1-4 hours per day maximum. The steps below are the sustainable protocol — not a heroic one-off.
Pick a specific weakness. Not 'get better at calculus' — 'get better at u-substitution when the substitution isn't obvious.'
Find 3-5 practice problems at the edge of your ability for that specific weakness.
Attempt each problem in Learn mode. When you get stuck, use the hint ladder — don't look at the full solution.
After each problem, note the specific error class. That becomes your next practice target.
Rest between problems if you're fading. Rest is not laziness; it's how attention rebuilds.
Stop after 90 minutes even if you feel fine. The next 30 minutes are lower-quality.

How many hours a day?▾
Ericsson's original research suggests 1–4 hours per day of true deliberate practice is the sustainable ceiling. Beyond that, focus degrades. Brainback sessions of 30-60 minutes match this shape.
Can I deliberately practice a subject I'm brand new to?▾
The 'edge of ability' works even at zero. The edge for a beginner is different than for an expert. Learn mode calibrates automatically via the hint ladder.
How is this different from just doing problem sets?▾
Problem sets often live in the too-easy or too-hard zone. Deliberate practice keeps you on the boundary. The tutor's job is to steer you there.
Does the 10,000 hour rule apply to everyone?▾
No. The 10,000 hours is a cognitive-domain average, not a universal law. Native ability, quality of instruction, and cumulative deliberate-practice hours all matter. Malcolm Gladwell's popularization of the number is more absolute than Ericsson intended.
Is deliberate practice always painful?▾
Not painful — effortful. There's a difference. Effortful practice with immediate feedback is deliberately-selected difficulty; painful practice is either poorly-selected or excessive volume.
