The difference between learning and consuming

One creates capability. The other creates the feeling of capability.

abstract

A short piece on the difference between generative and receptive engagement — and why the consumer AI industry mostly ships the wrong one.

Learning and consuming are neighbors that get confused constantly. You watch a video about calculus. You read a Wikipedia article on the French Revolution. You listen to a podcast on macro. You feel informed. You feel like a learner.

But you have not learned anything durable. You have consumed.

Consuming is receptive. Learning is generative. The distinction is not academic; the brain does different things. Receptive engagement activates recognition circuitry — enough to feel familiar with the material later. Generative engagement activates retrieval and production — enough to reproduce the material later.

The consumer AI industry has mostly built receptive products dressed as learning tools. Summaries. Explanations. Q&A. All of it lands on the receptive side.

Brainback is built the other way. Every core interaction — attempt, hint request, explain-back, recall review — is generative. The student produces. The system responds. The system does not produce for the student. That is not a limitation. That is the whole design.
